A community planting effort in Clevedon

with Tāmaki Primary School



On a fine winter's day in August, the enthusiastic and energetic students from Tāmaki Primary School set out to plant the 700+ native plants they raised and cared for over the last year. The eager students were lucky to get supported by a great
group of helpers from the Freemasons Foundation, the Rotary Club of Remuera and Ventia staff - thanks to you all for your support of Trees for Survival.

Having outstanding support from our sponsors as well as the landowner who drilled holes with the fantastic Makita auger meant the planting got done in record time. This gave us time to enjoy a delicious lunch put on by our lovely community of TfS landowners, meet the landowner's horse and we were also able to do some water quality testing in the stream. We looked at the five C's - clean, clear, cool, current and critters. It was great to discover that the water quality was really good, definitely helped by the fact that the stream flows through areas of native planting. 

Trees for Survival has been planting in this valley for the past few years, facilitating planting days with Sunnyhills School, Papakura Normal School, Royal Oak Primary and Tāmaki Primary School. Planting here in Clevedon is a fantastic example of neighbours and schools working together to achieve positive environmental outcomes. The native planting along this local Clevedon stream in the Wairoa River Catchment is starting to look wonderful and everyone should be proud of what they have achieved.
 

 

 

 

Trees for Survival has appreciated the opportunity to be part of Matariki Tu Rākau, a national project initiated by Te Uru Rākau/ New Zealand Forestry to establish stands of trees across Aotearoa as places to honour New Zealand's heroes.
 

Many of our Trees for Survival schools have taken the opportunity to nominate a local hero in their community and plant the native plants they grew this year in dedication of their community hero. Each of these planting sites have been provided with a dedication plaque which is awesome. We are thrilled at the diverse and heartfelt dedications our schools have made. 

Being part of Matariki Tu Rākau and being able to provide schools the opportunity to celebrate their local hero adds an extra special meaning to this year's plantings. Thank you to all those wonderful community heroes out there that make a difference to their local areas every day and help make our local communities unique!

 

Seedlings Delivery 2022


 

With our planting days coming to an end, a new growing year begins. Most of our schools would have received their new seedlings by now. Students will be busy potting up their native seedlings which they will nurture over the next year until they are big enough to be planted out next winter.

A warm welcome also to our 37 new Trees for Survival Schools in Auckland, Waikato, Eastern Bay of Plenty, Rotorua and Taranaki!

Teachers, please remember to keep your seedling trays, boxes and cardbord liners for your Facilitator to collect on their next visit as we can reuse them again.

 

 We are looking forward to attending O Tātou Ngāhere Conference: Regenerating Our Landscape with Native Forest
on Thursday 27th & Friday 28th October at Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington. 

Trees for Survival will be presented at the rangatahi panel discussion on Friday morning by Halle who is our Programme Facilitator in Hamilton, as well as TfS student Natalia from Waiuku College.

There is an opportunity for your school to join the rangatahi panel discussion livestream from your classroom on Friday 28th October, approx. 10:25am start.

NZAEE Conference 2022

 

We enjoyed participating in the Local Connection Day of the
NZAEE (New Zealand Association for Environmental Education) Conference 2022: Hā Hauora Tangata earlier this month.

We joined the Local Connection Day in Whakatāne, organised by Eastbay REAP and Halo Whakatāne Conservation Project. The event was a great way for teachers, mana whenua and community groups to share knowledge as well as a great opportunity for TfS Facilitators and teachers to get together. 

This group photo was taken in front of the TfS shadehouse at Whakatāne Intermediate School, which is one of our five new schools in Whakatāne & Opotiki area. The shadehouse is full of native seedlings which the students have potted up and will now nurture until the winter planting season next year when they will plant them out at a local site to enhance and protect the local environment.
