Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498)
It's time to say goodbye...........
Well not really as we will be back as Co Club Service Directors for the new year, but it was our last breakfast meeting, as Co Presidents.
We feel very privileged to have led the Club for the last year, although times have been a little different and we hope that we have made the best of the somewhat challenging circumstances.
That's all in the past, now to the future of the Club, and yes it is bright with 'GrayGazmataz' our 'boy' twins as Co Presidents leading the RCSTJ for the next year. Onwards and Upwards we say!
The last meeting was well attended, in fact the most we have had for breakfast for a while, with the guest speaker being Zane who is currently doing a desk job at Coastguard having enthralled us with his pathway through surf lifesaving and Coastguard - bet he isn't only doing that desk job for too much longer!
Looking forward to Changeover, wearing a bit of green, it will be blast! See you all there, in the meantime just a simple thank you to all for supporting us in our year.
L and P
....and from all your fellow club members a huge "thank you to you two too"!

Onja:
Our Co-Presidents, aware that Claire was present, took the opportunity to invite her to update the meeting on the latest from ONJA. It is all good news!
All students / graduates are now working as Software Developers!
A "Growth Manager" was recently appointed to ensure work opportunities continue to be identified.
The growth also requires additional funding and ONJA are exploring several opportunities including potentially submitting a a new application for another grant from Rotary International.
Guest Speaker:
Club Services Director Robyn introduced our guest speaker, Zane Rademmaker who has had a very active and meaningful life in and out of the water. Firstly with Surf Lifesaving, and now he is one of the few paid fulltime employees working on "comms" for Coastguard Auckland, located in Auckland Marine Rescue Centre, Mechanics Bay. Prior to working for Coastguard, Zane was a keen and very successful volunteer Surf Lifesaver.
At the age of 8 he won the swimming Nationals for his age group and since then he has never really looked back.
Over the years he excelled in many areas of Surf Life Saving such as;
Surf Sports
Patrol Captain
Director at Life Saving at United North Piha
Paid Life Guarding in summer
Trainer
Youth development
Regional support roles
He was awarded the Life Guard of the Year title in 2015 and shortly thereafter was selected to participate in the Surf Lifesaving "California Exchange", an eight week visit to California working in 20 different areas and departments.
He has been a life saver in Cornwall England and participated in the National Australia Leadership Camp in 2018 and in 2020 he looked for a change and joined the Coast Guard. He shared details of his role at Coast Guard and also details of their day to day activity and what is involved.
Prior to answering many questions from the floor about both Surf Lifesaving and the Coast Guard, Zane shared with us how members of the public could help both organisations, and there are many opportunities, from cash donations, becoming a paid member - active or non-active, being involved in fundraising activities, encouraging friends and family members to become involved, gifting and there are many others.
Many thanks for taking the time to to speak to us Zane and a huge thank you for all you have done in keeping the public of New Zealand safe!

Calling All Members - Apirana Reserve Working Bee Sunday June 19th! You should have received the following e-mail direct from Director Peter B, providing details of the day, but just incase you didn't receive it, herewith a copy.
"Dear Fellow Rotarian,
On Sunday 19 June, we seek your help at our St Johns Working Bee at Apirana Reserve, 81-87 Apirana Ave, Glen Innes, from 9.00 to 11.30 am, with optional coffee to follow.
Our plan on the day is to prepare for planting in July by spreading newly arrived piles of mulch across the planting area.
Volunteers will need to bring gloves, a shovel or spade, and a wheelbarrow (or large paint pail) if possible. Be sure to also bring drinking water and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Fine weather ordered, but sometimes orders get misunderstood!
The site is showing impressive growth and survival of the trees we planted last year despite the earlier drought. The mulch we spread last year has really counted in protecting the young tree roots from desiccation.
Please reply to me by Sunday 12 June so that we can provide Ken, Roger, and Nanda with an estimate of numbers.
The photo below shows the success of last year's planting, and (attached) the before and after of mulch spreading last year - though maybe Gary and Kevin had some assistance??
