With fine weather ordered for this morning, and duly delivered, a hardy band of Rotarians joined with Auckland Rotaracters and other volunteers for a working bee at Apirana Reserve. Our task was to move a truckload of mulch from where it had been dumped to where it was needed. Its original location was where the delivery truck got stuck, thanks to the driver deciding he knew better than to follow the advised route over firmer and drier ground.
We used a combination of wheelbarrows and paint pails to move the mulch, under the watchful eye of Ken and Rodger who corralled us into a finely tuned and coordinated work-party – despite efforts otherwise (by nameless Rotarians, but you can guess who from the photo!).
Gumboots came into their own with deeper than expected water-filled holes, resulting in wet feet for some wearing shoes.
By 11.30am, we’d accomplished our mission, and headed off to a new (for us) coffee location at ‘Huddle’ in Morrin Rd.
Preparations are underway for this winter’s planting – to be at the far end of the reserve from the road, close to the railway tunnel. There will likely be a further working bee ahead of planting to get the site in shape to take the young trees.
