The Presidents' Pen

Co-Presidents St. Johns Rotary, Penny McGarry (Ph: 021 702 310), and Lesley Harris (Ph: 027 4935 498)

Second week and NO ZOOM meeting  plus a  breakfast to enjoy also, Alex Gatt will be pleased about that!

A good turnout and the usual amount of frivolity ensued as members enjoyed each others' company. Co President Penny was fined for maximising her beauty sleep and being a little late!  Members perused the Glendowie College 2021 Year Book, which was nothing short of a splendid publication,  We are lucky to be associated with this fine school.

Our speaker, Terry Beckett was introduced by his brother-in-law John Lewisham.  Terry gave us an insight on Freshwater, more specifically Lake Tarawera which is dear to both Terry and John's hearts.

Here's to next week and more of the same!
Stay safe

Stories
Meeting in Review - February 17th 2022
Although the attendance is not up to where we would like, those present enjoyed the occasion in the normal manner.

Club Notices and Director's reports brought all up to date with current activity as reported already, plus some updates as follows were also shared;
  • RYLA is still scheduled to run from July 2 - 9, although subject, of course, to any Covid restrictions that may impact the event. Tom S. will again be coordinating St. Johns participation and he reminded us that nominations of potential participants are due by the end of March, interviews will take place in April, and if any members are interested in supporting Tom through the interview process, please contact him directly.
  • Our Club Services Director, up from Pauanui for the day, came loaded with Pauanui grown "wind fall" avocado's which were free for the taking - thanks Robyn.
  • PE Gary advised that he expects to announce the club officials at the first dinner meeting of the year on March 3rd.

Following the formalities, John Lewisham was pleased to introduce our guest speaker Terry Beckett, who also happens to be Johns brother-in-law.  John mentioned that Terry is an avid fisherman and what's more he is very good at it!  He can also boast a successful commercial career.  His primary interest today is focused on "Fresh Water", how it is managed and maintained, and his talk to us focused primary on the Rotorua Lakes District and specifically Lake Tarawera which has been a significant part of Terry's life since he was a child.

In New Zealand we each use on average 160 litres per day per person and 50% of all water available goes on irrigation.

Our lakes play a very important role in the provision of water, they are very fragile and have to contend with numerous invasive weeds, algae, fish, snails and other conditions that could assist with the degrading of fresh water supplies in a very short time frame.  Over time, hopefully many many years, all lakes will degrade and die, which makes the work that Terry and many others do to monitor and maintain as critically important.

Many thanks for your time Terry and for the very interesting talk - much appreciated.
Club Meetings and Other Important Dates
THURSDAY 24TH FEBRUARY - BREAKFAST MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER BRIAR LEITH:
About to start her last semester at AUT, Briar is on target to complete her BA majoring in International Relations and minoring in Public Relations.  While studying she has taken on a small international business with her partner, called Brucha NZ, that began in Mexico.

Briar will share her journey - which began at age 15 with an AFS scholarship to Argentina, her current studies and being a representative of kiwi and indigenous NZ culture have shaped her as a Global Citizen.

THURSDAY 3rd MARCH - DINNER MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER, All the way from Madagascar, SAM LUCUS:
Sam is the Founder of ONJA - a social enterprise which trains talented, underprivileged Malagasy/Madagascan youth into world class software developers ready to work.  Sam is one of our 'overseas' Club member's and resides in Madagascar, returning to NZ very infrequently.  Having secured a place in MIQ, he will be released from Isolation in time to present to us at our first Evening meeting for the year.

ONJA (meaning 'Waves') started their onsite school in December 2018, with 30 exceptionally talent-rich, opportunity-poor students from an initial pool of 250,000.

Sam will recap ONJA's start-up story, tell us of the students challenges and triumphs; update us on 'employment' success and (maybe) share plans for the next 'wave'.

Salvation Army Food Packaging
Once again St. Johns Rotary assisted The Rotary Club of Newmarket pack food packages for the Salvation Army.  Many thanks to the five St. Johns volunteers for their generosity donating their time for a morning packing last week.

We are scheduled to assist again at the end of March.  If any members would like to join the team please do not hesitate to contact our coordinator Murray H.

Trustee Meeting
The Trustees of the Rotary Club of St Johns Charitable Trust met for the first time in 2022 on Thursday 17th February.

The host for the meeting was Trustee Patrick Bell, (and Katrina).

New Trustees, Isabella and Gary, and in absentia Allan Smith, were welcomed.

Mark Hillman agreed to continue as Secretary and the vote was unanimous in declaring Lesley as Chairperson.  Mark will advise the Charities Register.

Business discussed was brief as we had previously approved the applications for funding as they came to hand.  The Trust will make  $10k of it's funds available should the Club need them, while retaining $20k reserve funding.

The future meeting dates were set for 18 May and 14 September 2022.

Membership
Our "Membership Coordinator". Beryl Robinson, has asked that the following be published;

AN EXAMPLE OF GROWTH

From ten members to thirty eight, it took all club members to embrace a strategy, and to follow it through.

I wish to share an example of how a Rotary Club decided that they needed to grow to survive. It was down to ten members - they now have a membership of thirty eight. Importantly, it took all Club members to embrace a strategy, and to follow it through.

So I recently had a chat to the effervescent Past President Caroline Rickard from the Rotary Club of Bellarine North to find out their secrets for growth:

"Our strategy to increase membership is:

* Every member in our Club is responsible for Membership with a Membership Secretary and /or a small committee overseeing the smooth transition of growth and retention.
* When you are out in the community, talk about Rotary and your experience, and what attracted you to join at every opportunity you get.  start a conversation.
* Our members have been successful chatting to people as they are out walking their dog. They have met people new to the area and invited them along to meet other people.
* Wear your Rotary badge proudly out; it is always a good conversation starter.
* Explain that you don't have to have any special skills just come with your ideas and an open mind.
* Invite them to a Club project or a Club meeting that would have an interesting guest speaker.
* The most important part of the whole process is to get their details and FOLLOW THEM UP. Make regular contact even if they are not quite ready to commit.
* Our Club takes people out for coffee and answer any questions they have and ask what their interests and passions are.
* Introduce them to members with similar interests to start forming relationships.
* Use local papers and local magazines for publicity about the Club / Rotary in general. Make contributions regularly, editors appreciate surety they will get an article and hence more likely to ensure there is space.
* Our Club provides a fun and relaxing environment for people to commit to the organization that gets things done here and overseas."

Caroline sums things up by saying "I guess in summary we follow the Four-Way Test and make people feel welcome."

It is important to acknowledge that the growth success has come about by a team effort. A team that wished their Club to not only survive, but progress  and grow by becoming a more diverse and welcoming Club. It also took commitment and not to be afraid to get a few knock backs. It is also built on a premise that members form relationships based on friendship, common interests and passions.

Well done Rotary Club of Bellarine North - you are a wonderful example of how you can grow Rotary.
Candid Kev's Album
Candid Kev was back last week to add to his 2022 Album - did he catch you ?

Terry's talk certainly held the attention of the audience.

Our Social Co-ordinator Michelle working hard to sell the Cornwall Park walk last weekend - do support these events if you have a chance!

Is John counting Beans or coins to pay his fines - sorry John no Beans accepted.

Now this is how you start the Haka - just follow along with me!

He maybe the oldest in the family, but I'm the wisest!

What a happy looking bunch.

Trust me - pay me now and next time I'm at the Hospice Shop I will get you a shirt like this.

I know it keeps falling off - I'll be sure to get one with new elastic next week.
